June 1st kickoff meeting reveals WeAreFrisco.org effort already in advanced stages.

Over 50 residents representing the communities of Lakehill, Heritage Lakes, The Villas, The Lakes, and Stonebriar attended the formal launch of the redistricting petition drive held at the Heritage Lakes Clubhouse on Sunday, June 1.  The Manager of the Sequoia Apartment Homes on Town & Country Blvd was also in attendance on behalf of his registered-voter tenants with children in the LISD school system.

Dudley Wilson opened the meeting with an overview of the redistricting effort which led to a robust question, answer, and discussion session amongst many of the supporters in attendance.  The discussion centered on issues like the timeline and the particulars of the legal roadmap to be followed.  To guide us down the legal path, the formation of a legal advisory committee made up of resident attorneys was announced.

The session closed with a summary of the meeting held on Tuesday, May 27 with Frisco’s new Mayor, Maher Maso, FISD Superintendent, Dr. Rick Reedy, and FISD Assistant Superintendent, Richard Wilkins.  Representing WeAreFrisco.org were Dudley Wilson, Bill Osborn, David Arbuckle, Ed Pete, and Alvin Huerta.  To view the details of that meeting click here.

Even though the meeting served as the formal launch, the petition drive was well under way as hundreds of signatures had already been collected.  Deborah Fitzhugh, heading up the Stonebriar drive, turned in 750 signatures gathered by their very well organized women’s groups.  This single contribution represented half of the signatures needed under the code.  Not a bad start!!

Hundreds of signatures were submitted from all the neighborhoods represented and, with the 350 signatures collected at the website, the total number in hand at the June 1 launch was approaching  1300. The last official voter count was 2992 so we’re already 86% of the way to the required signatures and almost halfway to our goal of 90% of all residents.  Congratulations to all involved!

As the meeting closed, residents from each neighborhood broke into groups to divvy up their street assignments and then everyone set out to collect signatures with an encouraging sense of enthusiasm about the prospect of reaching our objective – to complete our inclusion into the community of Frisco by having our children go to school here.

Come mid-June, WeAreFrisco.org team leaders will reconvene for a petition drive update and to implement the final phase of the drive.  Keep abreast of developments here at the website and be sure to register in the discussion forums.  All opinions are welcome.
