LISD confirms plan to move Frisco residents to Colony High

By Fran Wilson

On June 19, 2008, I attended a meeting held by LISD official Brant Buck, Assistant Superintendent of LISD. Representatives from all Frisco Homeowner Associations that reside within LISD were invited.  In attendance were Bill Osborn HOA President of Stonebriar, Keith Gyssler HOA President of The Lakes, Amber Fulton, LISD Board Member Place 6, Tommy Ellington, Executive Director of Student Services, and Dr. Rocky Brookmole, Executive Director of Student Services.

The primary focus of the meeting was the presentation of student demographic projections to show why our neighborhoods can’t support a middle school. However, the most important thing to come out of the meeting was the fact that our ultimate destiny will be The Colony High School. We all learned that this inevitability had been the plan for years.

Brant Buck, who hosted this meeting, stated the following. “10 years ago, Dr. Downey was saying that eventually at some point down the road … 121 was going to be the natural divider for High Schools.” (Dr. Downey was the Superintendent preceding Dr. Roy).

I replied: So you’re foreseeing our neighborhoods going to Colony High School?”

Buck: “The folks that have lived out in Stonebriar and Frisco….have been told for years that eventually it was going to happen. That has been stated going back as far as Dr Downey.”

Superintendant Buck also stated that “Hebron High School is the fastest growing HS in our district because of all the growth coming in the Austin Ranch area and over by Killian Middle School….It’s projected at 3500 students by 2012, so we have in the bond issue a 9th grade center which will alleviate any crowding at Hebron High School. But, even with the 9th grade center Hebron High School is going to be full.”

Buck also stated that Colony High School has room for us, even now.

Prior to this meeting, I have never had any confirmation that Frisco neighborhoods would feed into The Colony High. As a matter of fact, several years ago another parent and I had a personal conversation with Dr. Roy at an LISD Board meeting. Dr. Roy stated there were discussions in place that we may eventually be zoned into The Colony High - but they were just discussions. Yet, after meeting with Brant Buck, and hearing his statements, I now know this eventuality had been set in stone years ago.

Redistricting to Frisco ISD is our Best Option

Our communities already are disenfranchised because we can’t go to school in the city we live in. I believe we have an excellent chance to effect change. We are already receiving great support from our Frisco legislators and Frisco Superintendant Dr. Reedy, stated that Frisco would be happy to have us should we achieve success with our redistricting effort. We have several intelligent, strategic thinkers working on this effort and a legal advisory committee has been formed, but we need more help. We will not give up and will keep working until we are successful. If at first we do not succeed, we will try, try, try, and try again. We will pursue every strategy and method until we are successful. Our group will not just go away. We are all very dedicated and we only have to win once!
